Usually, location and function are set, with one place having only one function and one shop area providing only one shop service during opening hours. However, the traffic location of the site and the function of on-street parking allow pedestrians and businesses to use the site more creatively and efficiently. The idea is to provide a place for residents, tourists and salaried workers to interact and create a community.
Location
Location: 29°59’25”N, 122°12’01”E
Plan: Relocate the bus stop to the central park of the city.
Dimensions of the park:
- Length: 25m
- Width: 475m
- Area: 11,840m²
Lane widths:
- Car lane: 1,500mm
- Bicycle lane: 4,500mm
The site for this project is located along National Highway 318 in Zhoushan, Zhejiang Province, China, specifically in a greenbelt area. Here's a summary of the current situation and background:
Current Analysis
- Location:
- The site is part of a greenbelt situated in the middle of National Highway 318.
- Historical Background:
- Previously, the greenbelt was planted with numerous trees. However, frequent typhoons caused significant damage, such as trees being uprooted or broken, which often disrupted transportation.
- Present Challenges:
- Due to the recurring typhoon damage, many trees were removed to prevent further transportation issues. As a result, the greenbelt has been left as an empty space.
- Bus Routes:
- Two of the island's limited bus routes pass through this site, giving it an important role as a transportation hub.
- Characteristics of the Surrounding Area:
- The surrounding region features a diverse mix of land uses, likely including residential areas, commercial facilities, and green spaces.
Large area of surrounding green space, advantageous for establishing landscape axes and maintaining landscape continuity Adjacent to the riverside, the waterfront woodland space must be treated to protect bird habitats. It overlaps the routes of several dedicated bus routes and is an important transfer point for public transport.
Moving the bus stop to the town centre park eliminates the need to cross two car lanes to change buses, with one footbridge on each side of the bus stop connecting to the footpath
The area around the site is rich in green resources, some of which are already in use as parks, and the beautiful environment attracts many people and high pedestrian
Requests at location
In the morning, the park can be used as a small market, serving breakfast to white-collar workers or providing fresh vegetables to nearby residents. The park's function is highly flexible, changing as retail vehicles change.
At lunchtime, lunches and coffee are served during the lunch break and the park is equipped with rest facilities, which can also be used as an urban outdoor restaurant.
It is customary for people after work or students after school to gather at night for a night party at a food stall, so tourists can easily join in.
Reducing the impact of traffic
First, to ensure the safety of park visitors and provide a comfortable and secure environment, the park is excavated 1.6 meters below ground level. The surrounding retaining walls and greenery are aligned with this lowered height, creating a vertical separation from external traffic.
On one side, a gentle slope is designed to facilitate easy access to equipment and facilities, while the other side incorporates a compact staircase, leaving ample walking space. These differing approaches enhance functionality while preserving convenience for various users.
The side with the gentle slope is complemented by a combination of stairs and ramps to enrich the spatial experience. For barrier-free access, the ramp is divided into two sections, maintaining a gradient ratio of 1:12 or less, enabling wheelchair users to navigate the slope independently.
Plan
Areas close to rivers should respect nature as much as possible and, in maintaining their original form, build water verges, plant wind resistant trees and improve their ecology.
The east side functions like a shopping street close to the metro, only here it is replaced by a sales van, more flexible and more appropriate to the daily life of the residents.
The function of the site is left to the residents themselves. However, it is envisaged that a small van selling vegetables and breakfast drinks will become a mini-market in the morning, a lunch van or café will become a town diner at lunchtime, a café outside the house in the afternoon, and a night market after work.
