The Merchant Marine Hall, established in 1715 by the Xiangshan Group, holds a significant place in Shanghai's history. Recognized as a cultural heritage site in 1959, it marks the starting point of Shanghai's economic development. This historic structure, with a legacy spanning over 300 years, now stands amidst a modern fortress of steel and concrete.
To honor its role in the city's lifeblood while fostering its growth alongside the town, my design approach focuses on creating an organic relationship between the hall and its surroundings through thoughtful landscaping. This integration aims to weave the hall seamlessly into the fabric of the town, ensuring it continues to evolve as a living part of the community's heritage and identity.
